MATANGI - Dasa Mahavidya series

Matangi, the ninth Mahavidya, governs over vaak (speech), knowledge, music & other arts. She is regarded as the tantric form of Saraswati. Once Shiva & Parvati organised a feast for Vishnu & Lakshmi. While eating the gods dropped some of the food which on touching the ground transformed into a beautiful maiden of emrald complexion, Matangi. She asked the gods for their leftovers which they did offer her as prasada. Then, Shiva declared that those who repeat her mantra and worship her will have their material desires satisfied, declaring her the giver of boons. Devi Matangi has two forms - Ucchishta Mantangi (holds a noose, sword, goad & club) & Raja Matangi (plays a veena). Her consort is the Matanga form of Lord Shiva.

Seeing Bhringi solely worshipping Shiva, provoked Parvati . So, she sat next to Shiva. Bhringi sensed what was going on and was reluctant. To make sure his wife gets the same devotion, Shiva embraced Parvati, so tight that they emerged into the Ardhanarishwara form. TARA - Dasa Mahavidya series

Tara comes second in the Dus Mahavidya pantheon. Her origin story takes place during the Amrit Manthan. During which the mother goddess took the form of Tara Devi to breastfeed Lord Shiva, who was dying because he consumed the . Her iconography is very much similar to Kali. She is also known as Tarini Devi meaning the goddess who makes us cross this delusional Samsara . She's more approachable to devotees because of her maternal instincts. She holds a pair of scissors, blue lotus , scimitar & kapala . Tara has eight forms who are Ekajata , Ugratara , Mahogra , Kameshwari , Chamunda , Neela Saraswati , Vajra , and Bhadrakali .

Chinnamasta Mandir, Dishergarh

Under the Dishergarh bridge, near the Damodar river is situated a shrine dedicated to the self-decapitated goddess, Maa Chinnamasta . It is only 7-8 km away from Neamatpur. Out of the concrete town, I experienced delightful green sceneries; came across villages those were calm, domesticated yet rebellious in the form of its youths. In the middle of a market, I found a giant orange entrance directing us to the main temple. Inside the main chamber resides the Goddess Chinnamasta, whose complexion is as red as hibiscus with the lustre of a thousand suns. When I looked at the bold, fearless, 16 year old goddess it seemed like she's conveying to her devotees, "O, mortals, what are you so proud of? Is it your youth? Your knowledge?
